Futsal Gala Day Parent report- 4th April 2024

Wow – what a day filled with nervous energy, excitement and fun!!

Last week students from Years 2,3 & 4 represented St Francis of Assisi at the Australian Futsal Association 2024 Schools Program. There was such strong interest in the day, that we had 74 students across 10 teams play. Our two Under 8 mixed teams, the Mumba’s and Sea Snakes, even made it to the semi-finals! Congratulations U8s!

The Sea Snakes started out slow with a 1-0 loss to Holy Family (Blue) but quickly settled into the game. From first-time futsal players to seasoned soccer fans, the Sea Snakes displayed great camaraderie, teamwork and good sportsmanship, being sure to share the ball and shake hands with the opposition at the end of each game. The quarter-final for the Sea Snakes was a nail‑biter with a nil‑all draw at full time, seeing us go to a penalty shootout. The team secured the win with a final score of 3-2.

The semi-final for the Sea Snakes saw us back challenging Holy Family (Blue). While the Sea Snakes scored the match's first goal six minutes in, it was disallowed following a protest from the opposition. The team got back to it, working hard to secure the win, but with just one minute to go, Holy Family (Blue) slipped a ball into the net, seeing them progress to the Grand Final match.

A big thank you to coach Debbi Fluke, for keeping our spirits high and reminding us that having fun, working as a team and trying our best was what was important.

On behalf of the participating students, thank you to all the parent volunteers who coached or assisted the teams, the teachers who attended to keep us safe, and a big shout out to Erin Steele (School Community Council Executive Member for Sports Programs) for organising our School participation in this event. Without their energy and effort, participation in events such as these would not have been possible.
