RE News

Welcome to 2022 and an extra special welcome to those, who like me, are new to the St Francis community! I have felt so welcomed by the children and those families I have met during morning and afternoon duty that I already feel part of the family. I come to SFA after 10 years as an REC at St John Vianney’s in Waramanga and I look forward to working with you all.

2022 Theme- Relationships: God, Myself, Each Other

This year has once again started differently due to the everchanging landscape but what hasn’t changed is our need to connect and form deep relationships with each other and God. Last week the staff had the opportunity to spend 2 hours (remotely) looking at the first section of out theme: What is my relationship with God? We looked at the different seasons that our faith and relationships with God go through and why each season is vital to continually develop a deeper relationship.

Weekend Gospel Reflection

In this Sunday’s Gospel we hear the familiar story of Jesus preaching from Simon’s (Peter) boat where the men have been fishing all night without catching a thing. Jesus tells the men to throw their nets out on the other side where they catch an abundance. Simon Peter becomes a follower of Jesus immediately. He calls Jesus “Lord”—the title given to Jesus after his Resurrection—and protests his worthiness to be in Jesus' presence. Today's Gospel, therefore, marks a turning point in the relationship between Jesus and Peter.  Jesus gives Simon a new job, telling him that he will become a different kind of fisherman. No longer will he catch fish; instead, he will catch people. In these words, we hear the beginning of the leadership role that Peter will have within the community of disciples. Peter was chosen for this role. His task will be to bring others to Jesus. Already he is doing so; the Gospel tells us that all the fishermen with Peter also left their nets and followed Jesus.

The people that Jesus choses to be his closest friends—his disciples— are normal human beings, like us. God used the gifts they were given to transform them into new people, leaders showing us the way to Jesus and the kingdom of God.

This week as a family, discuss how we can lead others to Jesus through our words and actions. Consider the questions; ‘how do I show leadership in my faith?’ and ‘how can I develop a deeper relationship with God in order to enhance the lives of others?

Have a great week.
