Dear Families
Enrolment Time 2020
I would like to remind families that enrolment forms for Kindergarten 2020 are to be handed in by Friday 31st May (siblings included). If you know families wishing to enrol for 2020, please encourage them to collect an enrolment form. We adhere strictly to the enrolment policy of Catholic Education, which requires the school to show preference to applications handed in during the Enrolment Period. We already have a good number returned for Kindergarten 2020 and there is a chance places could fill this year. We will hold our final Open Day on Wednesday 29th May and ask that you mention to your friends that they attend and have a look around our wonderful school. Our biggest advocate for our school is you. It is great to hear the many positive comments and feedback that our parents have, when recommending our school to other families. Thank you!
I commenced enrolment interviews this week and we have some very excited children and families ready for Kinder next year. If you are thinking of enrolling a child at the ELC in Gowrie, forms need to be returned soon.
High School Enrolments
For children enrolling in Systemic Secondary schools, including St Mary MacKillop Catholic College and St Clare’s College, online enrolment forms need to be submitted to the school of your choice by Friday 29th May.
Mother’s Day Breakfast
Last weekend we celebrated Mother’s Day, a special day where we celebrate and pay tribute to all our Mothers who work tirelessly every day in ensuring we are happy and safe.
We had a great turn out to our Mothers’ Day breakfast last Friday. I hope all Mums and Grandmas had a great breakfast and were spoilt on Sunday. I would like to thank Mrs Tiffany Reedy for coordinating the breakfast. We also had many dads cooking on the BBQs! Thank you! It is community days like this that help make our school the great place it is.
Lord Jesus
You have known a mother’s love
and tender care, and You will hear,
while for our mothers most dear,
we offer this Mother’s Day prayer.
Protect the lives, we pray,
of those who have given us the gift of life.
May our mothers know from day to day
the deepening glow of joy that comes from Your presence.
We cannot pay our debts for all the love
that we have received;
but, You Lord, will not forget their due reward.
Bless our mothers both in earth and heaven
Through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen
Ninja Warrior Colour Run Assembly
Thank you to all those who sponsored our Ninja Warrior Colour Run. We have our prize assembly tomorrow in the hall at 2.00pm and the children are very excited to see who will be lucky to win some of our fabulous prizes. A big thank you to the Colour run committee who worked tirelessly to make this an enjoyable event for all.
Cross Country
On Monday this week we held our annual Cross Country Carnival. We were very blessed with the weather, with a mild Autumn day. The kids were very enthusiastic and participated with great sportsmanship. Results for the carnival will be announced next week.
Disco
We are all looking forward to our disco to be held tomorrow night Friday 17th May. Once again we have our fabulous DJ, Mr Feerick, who will entertain the children throughout the night.
Kindergarten to Year Two ~ 6:00pm – 7.00pm
Year Three to Year Six ~ 7:15pm – 8:30pm
The cost $5 per student or $10 per family - please pay by QKR up to midnight tonight or cash payments are welcome at the door.
Parent assistance is essential on this night to help with the various jobs required to make this a successful and enjoyable evening for all. Many parents do attend this evening so I ask that you consider making yourself available to assist. Please make contact with Leanne Tunningley if you able to help out.
For the safety and security of every child, no child may arrive or leave without a parent or responsible adult in attendance. All parents/guardians are to park in the car park and bring their child to the check in desk in the hall foyer. The disco is for St Francis of Assisi Primary students only. Students from other schools are not allowed to attend.
A big thank you to Emma Schmid, Belinda Duffy and Leanne Tunningley for organising this wonderful community event. We are looking forward to a great night!
Rostrum
On Monday 20 May we will hold our school rostrum final. Rostrum is a public speaking competition that all children in Years 4 – 6 participate. One child from each class is selected to partake in our school final. Parents and friends are more than welcome to attend. The final will take place in our school hall at 11:30am.
Hats Off June and July
In June and July, hats go away!
Cancer Council ACT does not generally recommend sun protection behaviour (ie hat wearing and sunscreen application) when UV levels are under 3 due to the low risk of potential UV skin damage. In Canberra UV levels drop and remain under 3, all day, around the June and July period and so the ‘End of May is Hats Off Day!’
Leave
During Week 5 and Week 6 I will be taking some Long Service Leave to spend time with my family. During my time away Mrs Tiffany Reedy will be Acting Principal. Please see Mrs Reedy if you need any support during my absence.
Staffing
Mrs Tanya Dunley has accepted a teaching position at St John Vianney’s Waramanga from Monday 3rd June, Week 6, Term 2 for the remainder of the school year.
Mrs Tanya Dunley has worked at St Francis of Assisi for many years and is an integral member of our staff. She will be sadly missed. Mrs Lauren Macdonald will continue to teach Year 4 Earth in a part-time capacity and I will be recruiting a teacher to work with Lauren over the coming weeks. I will inform everyone once I have secured a new teacher to the role.
We wish Tanya all the very best in her new endeavour and thank her for her outstanding contribution to our school community.
Last week we also said goodbye to Pam Villatobas. Pam was our Assistant Director at BASCA and has accepted a position as Assistant Director at St Anthony’s Before and After School Care. We wish Pam al the very best at St Anthony’s and know that she will be sadly missed.
Warm Clothing
As we hit the Winter months, Canberra does become very cold. We are seeing quite a number of children coming to school without warm clothing. Please ensure that your child has a jumper on before they leave home. We do many activities outside and it can be quite unpleasant for children who are not appropriately dressed. Children may also wear navy blue coats and navy blue or maroon beanies, scarves and gloves during the colder months.
Canteen Birthday Cakes
Just a reminder that our canteen is offering parents the opportunity to purchase birthday treats for your child’s class. We have many children in our school who have food allergies and birthday treats have proven to be a problem in years past. We are a nut free school and all birthday treats provided must adhere to this. Any product that is brought to school that contains nuts will not be served to children and will be sent home. To avoid any confusion, the canteen is offering nut free products, along with healthy options. If you are interested in ordering birthday treats for your child, please use QKR.
Staff Retreat
On Friday afternoon, 3rd May, the staff attended a Spiritual Formation Retreat at The Coachhouse in Bateman’s Bay till the Saturday lunchtime. This was a great time away from the busy-ness of teaching where the staff were able to reflect on our mission in Catholic Education. The theme for our retreat was “Contemporary Disciples of Jesus”. We thank Fr James who led us in deepening our understanding of our mission.
Peace and Best Wishes

Principal
Dear families
Term 2 fee statements were issued this week and the due date for payment is Friday 14 June 2019 (end Week 7).
If you are paying by instalments, please take the time to check your statement to ensure that the instalments are enough to cover your fees for the year.
Please give me a call or send me an email if you would like to discuss your school fee account.
Many thanks

St Francis of Assisi Primary School is now using the SZAPP app for all communication with parents. We are no longer using SkoolBag.
It is important that you register for SZAPP so that you get notifications applicable to your students - please ensure your settings are up to date for the appropriate year groups as not all notifications are sent to all users.
If you are having trouble downloading the app, please give us a call on 6292 4500 or pop into the front office so we can help you get it sorted out.
